Apache Trail
The Apache Trail bisects Apache Junction on the east side of The Valley of the Sun, and right in the center of town it veers to the northeast, winding it's way to Roosevelt Lake across rugged mountain terrain. Driving The Trail is an 'eventful' and sometimes harrowing experience, but you can cruise it easily at your keyboard by logging onto the following link. Goldfield Ghost Town
It was a bustling little town perched atop a small hill between the mighty Superstition Mountains to the east and the Goldfield mountains to the west.
Goldfield in the 1890s was a booming community with a population of approximately four thousand people. In it's heyday there were 50 working mines in the district and the town itself boasted 3 saloons, a boarding house, general store, blacksmith shop, brewery, meat market and a school house. The boomtown of Goldfield was located on a little knoll on the Mammoth Mine Road, off the Apache Trail on the north eastern outskirts of Apache Junction.
Today you can still visit Goldfield. Walk down Main street, explore the many shops and buildings, tour the mine, visit the Goldfield museum, pan for gold, take a narrow guage train ride, or witness an old west gun fight or a hangin'. Then stop by the saloon for a cold mug of beer. It's a trip back in time.
